Good morning everyone:

One can clearly see the cold front just pushing on over the Cape but the bad cold front is the one that is developing in the cold air behind the first cold front. The first cold front will move slowly eastwards but the second cold front is moving faster and will catch up with the first cold in the next 24-36 hours. When the second cold front hits the Cape it will become very cold with snow from likely Sunday night/Monday morning on the south-western Cape mountains. Ahead of the cold front, although still cold at sunrise will warm up significantly and with that the wind will also increase and that will enhance the fire danger index over the central, northern and eastern interior and coast. Take care. The wind at the Cape this morning not to bad with light rain but as the day progress the wind will increase and the rain wil get heavier and when the second cold front hits during the early hours of tomorrow morning the rain showers may become heavy at times. Local flooding in the Cape flats are likely and people should take the necessary steps not to stand knee deep in the water, shit to higher ground where it is possible.

Take care and enjoy whatever the weather!!

Good morning everyone;

Mostly sunny and cold at first but mild during the afternoon when warm in the north. As the cold front to the west of the Cape get closer to the Cape the gradient wind will start to effect most of the central and northern parts of the country and the combined gradient and thermal gradient will increase the wind on average but make it gusty over high lying areas of the Highveld, the central and northern parts of the Freestate. (This also mean that even with mild temperatures over Gauteng just above 18-20 C over the central and southern parts during midday may experience gusty winds with increased fire danger conditions) The further west you are over the interior the stronger the wind and you can also expect increased wind and will become even stronger as we progress into the week-end. Mainly sunny and cool over the eastern coastal areas including the Lowveld but warm in the afternoon with the same effect regarding the fire index although a bit later still a bigger risk for fires thus those that are travelling over the eastern interior and coastal areas take care and do not do something stupid. Over the south-west Cape coast you will experience a few high cloud clouds (cirrus) but as you can see it will become cloudy to even overcast by later this afternoon with the first patches of rain occurring in the mountains and as the cold front start to move in closer to the Cape the stronger the wind and talking about wind, this wind will increase to gale force over the week-end first as north-westerly winds followed by gale force westerly to south-westerly wind when it will start to become really very cold with snow on the mountains and we will most likely see that if it does not rain to much prior and during the post frontal stage. This is also an early call to be prepared for very cold and windy conditions and also a chance for local flooding in the Cape flats areas over the week-end and do not be surprised if we see pictures of people standing in the water in Monday morning’s news papers!! Please go to www.netfor.co.za for more detail under the 3 day forecast, that is free!! The first satellite picture show a tremendous amount of cold air behind the cold front and the reason that I think the models are correct in forecasting a beast of a cold front that will also start to impact the interior as far north as Gauteng by Monday. It will be great if power utilities can make use of hydro power at Gariep and Van Der Kloof for peak during peak power use by Monday afternoon.

Have a great day and week-end!!

Good morning everyone:

Sunny and cold but mild in the afternoon when it will be warm in the north. Similar weather is expected over the northern interior except that the Lowveld may reach temperatures close to hot by midday. Sunny and cold over the Freestate with light frost over the central and north-eastern parts while day time temperatures will be mild. Cold over the western interior at first but mild during the day. Partly cloudy and cold over the south-west Cape coast but it may still become cloudy at times during the morning with a few light rain patches. Mostly sunny and mild along the south, south-east and east coast but mild during the midday when it will be warm over the east coast and adjacent interior. Big changes in the weather are expected over the week-end and by that I mean very cold weather over the central and western interior and perhaps a very good chance for heavy falls of rain over the south-west Cape coastal regions with even a chance for snow over the Boland mountains, keep informed and stay tuned to www.netfor.co.za for your latest updates!!

Have a great day!!

Good morning everyone:

Cold over the southern parts of Gauteng with light frost otherwise cold but mild during the afternoon when warm in the north. Cloudy over the central and eastern parts of the northern interior and that include the Lowveld where there is a few fog patches this morning but mild during the day. Moisture levels are somewhat higher over the Low and Highveld and that will reduce the fire risk somewhat but it does not mean there will be no fires. Cold over the Freestate this morning with fairly wide spread light frost but with a cold front nearing the Cape the flow should become more northerly to north-westerly thus fairly warm for this time of the year during the afternoon. Sunny and cold over the western interior with light frost over a couple of regions (see list of stations under 3 day forecast) but warm in the afternoon when it will become partly cloudy in the extreme west. Partly cloudy and mild over the Cape but it is expected to become cloudy with a few rain showers as the cold front moves in during the afternoon. The wind over the coastal regions will become fresh north-westerly. Mostly sunny and cool over the south and south-east Cape coastal areas becoming warm over the eastern coastal areas in the pre-frontal and pre coastal low phase. There are a few cloudy patches this morning over mostly northern Kwazulu-Natal but that should clear and become warm during the afternoon.

Have a lovely day!!

Good morning everyone:

Mostly sunny and on the cold side but mild during the day. Cold over the northern interior but mild in the afternoon when warm over the Lowveld and that is the same for Mpumalanga. Sunny and  cold over the Freestate but mild in the afternoon and similar conditions can be expected over most of North-West and the western interior. Cloudy with a few rain patches over the south-west Cape coast and it will remain cold. Small areas right on the coast of Kwazulu-Natal will be cloudy at first with a few thundershowers but that should clear as the day progress. Mostly sunny and cold over this interior but mild during the day.   A few shallow fog patches will occur over parts of the Transkei at first but that should clear and become sunny. A few spots also have fog this morning over Namaqualand but that should also clear rather fast as the day progress.

Have a great day!!

Good morning everyone:

Sunny and cold with a  north-westerly breeze over the high lying areas of Johannesburg making it feel a bit colder than the 6-8 C but mild in the afternoon when warm in the north. Also a bit on the cold side over some areas over the northern interior but warm in the afternoon when it will be hot in the Lowveld and that include the southern Lowveld.   Mostly sunny and cold over the Freestate with one or two spots in the north-east that will start the morning off with light frost but partly cloudy in the south-west and south where there is a very small chance for a few isolated rain patches but a bit more scattered over the southern Drakensberg areas. Partly cloudy to cloudy over the south-west Cape coast, including the south and south-east Cape coast with a few isolated rain patches but I do not expect a lot of rain. Over the last 24 hours the Cape areas had reasonable rain with a few mountain areas that received more than 50 mm over the last 30 hours!! That is the weather in short!!

Have a great day!

Good morning everyone:

Sunny and on the cold side with Pretoria at around 5 C and Vereeniging at around 1 C with light frost. Cold over the northern interior at first but sunny and mild during the day when warm in the Lowveld. Cold over North-West but not cold enough for significant frost and the same can be said for the Freestate but sunny and mild during the day. Cloudy to overcast over the south-west Cape coast areas with light rain at times during the morning and early afternoon period and it will remain cold, meaning maximums will not exceed 17 to 18 C on the  maximum side. Fair weather occurs along the south and south-east Cape coast where fair means there is a fair amount of high cloud also called cirrus cloud. On the mild side along the Kwazulu-Natal coast but cold over the adjacent interior at first but in all cases warm off-shore flow is expected during the day with fairly high fire danger conditions and is also valid for the southern Lowveld where the wind is already up to 17 to 20 km/h at around 10 meters from the west above the ground. Have a great day and keep in mind it is now fire danger conditions over most of the interior and the eastern coast areas and Lowveld!!

Have a great day!!

Good morning everyone:

Same story, cold at first with frost in the low lying areas of Vereeniging but partly cloudy and mild in the afternoon when it will be warm in the north. Cold over the northern interior but partly cloudy in the afternoon when it will be warm. Cold with frost over the central and north-eastern Freestate but sunny and mild during the day. Not that cold over the western interior but cool enough to put on a jacket but warm in the afternoon in the pre-frontal conditions that will develop as the day progress. Cloudy with rather thick fog over the south-west Cape coast clearing partially but become overcast by the afternoon and evening with a few light rain showers spreading to the south-coast overnight.  The wind will start of light north-west over the south-west Cape coast but will pick up during the afternoon as the cold front get closer to the coast but I do not see significant cold air behind the cold front to foresee extreme wind conditions just enough to make it a bit uncomfortable. Mostly sunny along the south and south-east Cape coast and it will become warm ahead of the coastal low at the Cape this morning but as the coastal low moves up the coast as the day progress it will become colder from the south-west as far east as East London. Sunny and mild over Kwazulu-Natal with a few cold areas over the interior but warm in the afternoon with a fairly high fire index, thus take care!!

Have a lovely day!

Good morning everyone:

Sunny and cold but mild in the afternoon when it may become partly cloudy again but I do not expect significant rain. The same is valid for the northern interior and the Lowveld, Kwazulu-Natal and the Highveld. Sunny and cold over the Freestate with a few spots with light frost at first but sunny and mild during the day. Coolish over the western interior but not cold at first but warm during the day with a moderate north-easterly to westerly breeze already in progress with rather fresh thermal wind over Beufort-West this morning with an average speed of 38 km/h gusting up to 54 km/u. This wind as it start to warm up should ease somewhat during the midday period when temperatures will be closer than this morning. Thermal winds are created in the early morning due to uneven cooling between low and high ground where the low ground is at minimum 4-5 C cooler than the high ground areas. This effect is reversed by midday but at said time not that great a difference as in the morning, except if and when there is a gradient wind ( gradient wind is started when there is a big difference in barometric pressure over a short distance and in case of the central Karoo when there is a well defined cold front at the Cape with very low pressure. Partly cloudy to cloudy over the south-west Cape, south and south-east Cape coastal areas as well as parts of the adjacent interior of the Eastern Cape. Once again a rather good day over most of the country with no extreme weather!!

Have a lovely day!!
