Good morning everyone:
It remain rather cold at sunrise over most of the interior areas and even parts over the western parts of the northern interior and North-West has also started with between -2 to -3 C this morning. Very cold over the Vereeniging area at first with sub zero temperatures with wide spread frost. The KZN coast not to bad with temperatures above 10 C but the interior areas remain cold at sunrise with frost over the western interior areas with the lowest temperature at -4 C just to the west of Newcastle while Newcastle town is around 1C with frost at first. A few places still rather cold over the south-west Cape region with Ceres at 2-3 C but most parts already up to 20-21 C with the expected off-shore flow over the region where maximums are expected to reach as high as 25-28 C with extremes of up to 31 C in the Vredendal region. Still cold over the PE area at first with temperatures well below 7 C but there are a few spots along the south coast where the temperatures has risen already to above 16 C and also in these parts temperatures will recover significantly during the day. Apart from the Cape regions where there was rain over the last 5-7 days little or no rain has fallen over the south and south-east Cape coast with the result that the fire index will rise as well, thus take care and look out for smoke plumes as the day progress. Little or no cloud is expected over most of the country thus sunny across almost all region with day fairly mild day time temperatures. That is the story, a bit boring but that is that for today!
Good morning everyone:
The cold front has kicked back from the east and north-east with overcast weather over most of central and northern Gauteng with fog in and around the Kemptonpark area. The cloud cover has lifted the minimum temperatures over these regions including the northern and eastern interior but on the other side of the coin, with less sunshine today maximum temperatures will not recover as much as yesterday, thus a rather cold day today. Further south there is no cloud with the result that temperatures has dropped well below freezing this morning again with wide spread frost over the Freestate, Northern Cape and the central and western parts of North-West. Potchefstroom’s temperature has once again dropped to around -4 to -5 C and that is very cold for this region. It does look as if the cloud is not that much over KZN with the result that minimum temperatures has also dropped significantly over the interior areas with frost over a large area. It is also rather cold over the Eastern Cape interior and even as low as 1- 2 C over the Transkei area this morning with frost while it is mostly sunny weather that is expected over the central and western interior where the maximum temperatures will recover with 1- 3 C today and that include the south west Cape coastal areas. Although the moisture levels has increased significantly over the eastern interior the inflow seem to be moderate and not strong thus only a few isolated spots had a bit of drizzle. Well, another cold day thus keep warm and although it seems o.k. to burn an old maize field (or whatever) still keep an eye out for smoke, after the very cold weather the last 24 hours over the greater part of the interior, there is more than enough dead grass and bushes that will burn out of control, never say a fire cannot spread. I have seen in the past that even under blue conditions (meaning a lot of rain has fallen) fires has started that had to be stopped.
(Keep in mind: If you land up in fog on a highway this morning, go slow and rather be a couple of minutes late than sorry and even aircraft can be delayed due to heavy fog over airfields.)
Good morning everyone:
The cloud over the Northern Cape dissipated rather fast over the last 6-7 hours and that resulted in colder minimum temperatures this morning. As you can see the cloud band is moving out over the East London area while there is some low cloud moving in over Kwazulu-Natal. Still a few cloudy patches over the western escarpment that kept the minimums a bit higher but at the same time wil reduce the maximum temperatures. Although we cannot see it there is a cold front that has moved in over the Northern Cape and the western Freestate and as the day progress the cold air in the west will slowly move eastwards and will most likely reach the Gauteng area by late tonight, at first we will just feel the wind increase and then it will become rapidly colder. Still a few odd cloudy patches over the south-west Cape coast (postfrontal) and it will remain cold during the day. The wind, mostly thermal winds are already active over the Highveld areas this morning and coming in mostly from a westerly direction the flow will be off-shore, dry and warm, even hot in a few places in the Lowveld, but also over these parts one can expect the cold front to at first make gusty winds from midnight tonight onwards followed by much colder weather and a sharp increase in moisture and cloud and there is a chance for a few drizzle patches over the escarpment and Lowveld from tomorrow morning. I do not want to run so fast with the weather for the Lowveld, still dry and warm today with the normal spots with combined gradient and thermal winds with high FDI’S. Even if the index only reach 55- 59 base points and a fire should be started the wind will increase due to the thermal winds generated by a fire thus not safe at all to allow fires for today. Take care!! Bad luck Bulls hope you do a lot better next year!
Good morning everyone:
Once again a rather cold morning before sunrise over most of the interior while it is wet and cold over the south-west Cape coast. On average between 12-28mm has fallen over the Cape while Ceres had up to 20mm. A few spots had up to 2mm along the George coast but further east no rain has fallen. Ellisras has started off with 2 C while Vereeniging started off with -1 C with frost in moth cases. In the Stutterheim region temperatures are between 13 – 17 C with again fresh winds and that has already pushed the fire index to near 60 base points and while this region remain in a pre-frontal phase for the morning and early afternoon period people must take care. This is now a 4rd day in a row that the index has remained rather high in this region, not that bad along the coast where the coastal low has increased the moisture levels. Regions like Kimberley that was rather cold with sunrise over the last couple of days is also in the pre-frontal phase and temperatures are above 5-6 C with no frost. In general it will become cold in the west but mild over the central parts and warm from Gauteng north and eastwards during the afternoon period. With cold air starting to push in from the west the wind will become a bit more gusty during the day over the central and eastern parts and although not extremely dangerous fire weather it will become close to danger conditions more so when and if a fire is started and not controlled properly. Please take care. A lovely day is expected for Loftus and by 5pm the temperature should start to drop to reasonable levels but still take into account that the air is dry and players should take enough water before and during the game.
Have a lovely day and enjoy the Rugby and congrats to the cricketers that has won a game!!
Good morning everyone:
Yes, it started to rain over the Cape and I see isolated values of between 22 to 24 mm and even up to 10mm in the Tulbach area. Looking at the picture it does look as if more rain and showers can fall during the morning period but become more isolated showers during the afternoon. Still mostly cold over the interior and Pretoria sits at 2 C this morning and Ellisras at 1C with frost. A bit warmer over the central interior due to air flow that is a bit stronger in the pre-frontal phase and it is still rather windy over the East London region including the adjacent interior areas with rather high FDI (Fire danger index) Please take care and do not have an oops when it comes to fires. Also cold over the northern interior this morning but as the day progress it should warm up a bit more than yesterday (pre-frontal) but pre-frontal means that it will become post frontal in time thus colder again! Looking at the overhaul picture it will still be a very standard winters day, rain in the Cape as it should this time of the year and sunny over the interior. Stay warm and safe!
